John Cage
Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano
New UK issue of what the premiere recording of this historic work, originally issued by Dial Records in 1951, as performed by Maro Ajemian; later reissued by CRI, but long unavailable on that label. "John Cage was one of America's most important avant-garde/classical/conceptual composers of the 20th century. The influence of his works such as sonatas and interludes for prepared piano in both jazz and underground popular music (Stereolab, Broadcast and the like). This vintage recording dates from the early '50s when nothing like it had ever been heard before and is the perfect introduction to Cage. Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano is John Cage's magnum opus. This is the first recording of this work, played by the Armenian pianist Maro Ajemian over 50 years ago, when the music was new and shocking. It still is. -CP

Deep Wound
Almost Complete
"Deep Wound, was a strange and powerful unit inside the doctrinaire confines of hardcore. Although they were all kinda nerdy (excepting secret weapon Charlie Nakajima), they shredded in a very explicit way. There were some obvious structural debts to the Oi! bands in their compositions, but they approached the exterior textures with stylistic nuances that were distinctly North American. As the Neos did on their Hassiban Gets the Martian Brain Squeeze EP, Deep Wound compressed time in ways that were extreme, and way outside the standard square dance beat that had been defined by Robo's drumming for Black Flag. Every day they vowed to play faster. And they did, eventually developing a blur that could verge on experimental noise. Finally they burned as fast as they could, and realizing that was the case, they stopped. It was 1984. The rest of the story is well known: Dinosaur, the Outpatients, Sebadoh, Gobblehoof, etc. Most of what Deep Wound recorded is on this disk, and it still sounds pretty choice the hundredth time through (believe me, I know). Like many of their suburban kith, there are huge swathes of Xeroxed style and content, but these patches are obliterated by an underlying fascination with the reckless potential of absolute speed, and an intellectual overlay (albeit in a nascent state) that would blossom more fully in the bands that would follow. But y'know, hardcore was a really fucking good scene. And Deep Wound were a really fucking good hardcore band." -- Byron Coley -CP

Rub 'n' Tug
Present Campfire
Originally released in 2005. Campfire is New York party mavericks Rub 'N' Tug's decent into a raucous night out in Dante's disco inferno. DJs Thomas and Eric Duncan compile everything from Cozy Powell to Daniel Wang, in the true spirit of New York's after hours loft parties, rolled up with distortion, shouting, rock, funk and sweat. Based on a weekly NYC party called "campFIRE," this mix gives you a brief glimpse of the madness that is Rub 'N' Tug when the pair get behind the decks. From the piano-led house break of Bumblebee Unlimited's "Lady Bug" to the cinematic beauty of Double Fantasy's "Heartbreaker" and the strutting disco of Flash and the Pan and Hot Chocolate, Rub 'N' Tug know how to have a party and they're at a disco near you. Caterina Valente
The Hi-Fi Nightingale
Caterina Valente was the first international girl pop star and has much in common with the yé-yé girls of the '60s, Francoise Hardy, Brigitte Bardot, Sylvie Vartan and Anna Karina currently so beloved in Japan and in underground European pop circles. Her vocal range was often compared to that of Yma Sumac and it was her distinctive voice, allied with great charm and intelligence, which brought her immediate commercial success, and this compilation of her brilliant early work includes the three million selling hits 'The Breeze and I,' 'Malaguenña' and 'Love Paris.' This compilation has serious export potential to Europe, Japan and Australia where she toured extensively and was consistently successful. She was so successful in Germany she is often mistakenly thought to be a German singer. In the '60s and '70s Caterina recorded four albums with her second husband, the gifted British jazz pianist Roy Budd. -CP

Various Artists
Who Will Buy (These Wonder Evils)
First volume from 2003. "The Swedes are taking over and are hitting the music scene all over the world. But this is not really a new story. In Sweden, as many other countries, the appearance of the Beatles in 1964 brought a reaction against the stagnant music scene of the past. Literally thousands of pop groups appeared from nowhere and the music scene changed forever. Sweden soon became one of the greatest pop hotbeds of the world and this compilation is the solid proof. On these two sizzling discs the cream of the 21st century's Swedish pop/rock/psych wonders are matched with the unquestionable pioneers of the Swedish 60s. Disc one offers a initiated peek at what's happening in the Swedish rock, pop and psych scene right now. Known and unknown material from current heroes such as the Soundtrack of Our Lives (Grammy nominated in the US), H'kan Hellström (selling platinum in Sweden), and Caesars Palace (who just are one their way to conquer the UK), to hungry up-and-coming debutantes like Dungen, the Whyte Seeds and Franke, amongst others. On disc two we take a swirling ride through a time machine and encounter rare gems from the sinfully swinging Swedish 60s. Amazing fuzz psych head twister by the Shakers and Pugh. Swinging mod pop anthems by the Wizards, stellar harmony pop by the Jackpots as well as a groovy sitar psych nirvana with Charlie and Esdor, plus lots more compiled here for the first time ever. 2 CD records containing 33 Swedish top tunes housed in a mind expanding sleeve cram filled with pictures and informative liner notes." -CP

Uzeda
Stella
Uzeda is a four piece band that hails from Catania, a city in the region
of Sicily. Catania is known for its close proximity to Mt. Etna, a
volcano so consistently explosive that it makes the most obvious and
closest point of comparison for Uzeda's music. It seems only right to
say that Uzeda is the musical equivalent of this smoking mass of rock,
because the songs they create together ebb and flow like molten lava.
And the red-hot blasts of noise they've forged on their latest
full-length, Stella, are fiery enough to leave scars and burn marks.
One of the first things you'll notice upon listening to Stella is
the anguished screams of lead singer Giovanna Cacciola. Notice just how
quickly she can switch from crooning to howling on the appropriately
titled "Wailing." She practically reaches out of the speakers and
demands your attention. The angular, corrosive guitar work courtesy of
Agostino Tilotta is right there in the mix too, providing its own
commentary. And the punishing combo of Raffaele Gulisano on bass and
Davide Oliveri on drums is the group's constant. Throughout the album,
Raffaele's bass work takes the lead as often as any other instrument.
One-sided music this is not.
This type of songcraft needs a sympathetic producer, so who else were
the band to call than Steve Albini? He and Uzeda have a long history
together, with him having recorded a number of their previous albums.
He traveled to the city of Senigallia in their native Italy to record
Stella at Red House Recording Studio. Sure enough, the sounds he
captured on tape are just as muscular as you'd expect. And any fan of
the genre will be thrilled to discover the wonderful performances the
band laid down in the studio.
When it comes time to crank it up, you would do alright to check out
"Camillo" or album closer "Steam, Rain and Other Stuff". But really,
you can't go wrong with any choice off of Stella. The album has been
distilled down to the rough essence of its creation. And if you need
your bands to make concessions to the listener, forget about it. This
music is made for those who like their rock uncompromising, passionate,
and honest. There isn't a lick of false pretension in Uzeda's music.
And that's the only way they'd have it.
If we're to believe the music on this disc, Stella is one hell of
an intimidating lady. -CP

Supersystem
A Million Microphones
Just when I think I’m out, they drag me back in by the cord of my headphones. Before I was handed Supersystem’s A Million Microphones, out on Touch & Go Records since August 22nd, there was solace in my world. Aside from the occasional Maximo Park excursion, I had predominately left my Faint cds behind. They were good, they were fun, I enjoyed countless water park trips, but I had moved on.
Let the awkward one night stands begin anew.
I didn’t think it was even possible to take Supersystem out of my car, but I was wrong. Unfortuantly, that short period lasted just long enough so that I could transfer said album/portrait of black lit youth into my home stereo system. Which in turn made it a super system under the influence of, well, Supersystem.
Billed as a bunch of bullies that break down hip-hop (hippity hop, hip hop-apatomus?!) electronic, and dare I finally use in my vernacular, world music! But they don’t just break it down, nay good sir; they go for the entire Frankenstein package in this department of good will. Million Microphones jumps along at a dance party pace, while at the same time maintaining a chill atmosphere that would give Alec Baldwin some major chills.
These eclectic former El Guapo cohorts present you a potpourri of musical sampling that the Go! Team might have trouble keeping up with, but in a good and bad way. The bad way being that we can’t in fact see the Go! Team crying and slipping in their own tears when they realize they ain’t the supreme shit anymore. -JP

Marissa Nadler
The Saga of Mayflower May
2nd album from singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler. "A friend of mine, when visiting, was curious if I knew of another rich coloured voice like for instance, Sandy Denny. I couldn't convince him with Mandy Morton, but Marissa Nadler blew him away. And indeed, each song of Marissa's shows its own worlds in poetry, in growth like a flower, shining gently, accompanied by the spiral-wards splendid acoustic guitarpicking. From her earlier demo with different, easier guitar, and with a beautiful transformed dark melancholic melody is 'Yellow Lights'. 'Old Love haunts me in the morning', acoustic guitar, voice, and some piano, for me is almost like the voice of love itself, sadly unreachable, but therefore also beautiful and pure, as a spring-time condition. Somehow all inspirations on this album are as much related to nature, on various levels of inspiration. 'Calico' might be something like her place into the picture. 'Horses and their kin' is a perfect closer with 12-string guitar fingerpicking and various vocal chorus arrangements. Brilliant!" - Gerald Van Waes. The CD is housed in gatefold sleeve as well -- sort of a mini-version of the LP gatefold. -CP

Okkervil River
The President's Dead
"The President's Dead" is the first release by Okkervil River since 2005's masterful Black Sheep Boy project. Having spent most of 2005 touring and writing, the band and Jagjaguwar wanted to get this single out before 2006 came to a close. Locked in the grooves of this limited-edition vinyl-only release is what might be Okkervil River's most accessible and most contentious song, "The President's Dead." A two-minute and forty-two second serving of alternative historical fiction camouflaged as a folk anthem tarted up as a pop single that never was, "The President's Dead" empathetically depicts the shock felt by a young Republican upon hearing news of an assassination over the radio, its lyrics shifting sneakily from images of public horror to those of private tenderness as its music performs a similarly schizoid leap. Meanwhile, sequestered away on side 2, the lyric that bobs atop the loping, twangy pop of "The Room I'm Hiding In" depicts a paranoid flight from vastly more powerful pursuers determined to exact the most severe punishment. -CP
